LO1 - Commercial uses of Social Media

Advertising - Advertising is used frequently on social media in many different forms such as banners, pay-per click and sponsored links. Pay-per click advertising is widely used on search engines however it is also used on social media. A Pay-per click advert is a link that, when clicked, earns money for the publisher (social media platform) that is paid by the advertiser.

Viral marketing - viral marketing campaigns rely on word of mouth most of the time. For instance the most recent example of this is in the advertising campaign for Batman VS Superman, Warner brothers made a website and a twitter page for the fictional company LexCorp. Other films with viral marketing include Toy Story 3, and District 9. These marketing campaigns rely on people sending them around their friends, who then may send them to their friends and so on and so forth. This is often present in mobile games as well as free mobile games make their money through advertisements within the game.

Product/service reviews -  Personal reviews often generate more user base for social media platforms as people tend to trust reviews from other users more than paid advertisements as they are often less biased and more honest. However user reviews could also be negative and show the product in a bad light as the people writing user reviews have no reason to be overly positive and as such will be honest. Product reviews are part of web 2.0 as the reviews are users communicating with other users.

LO1 - Task 2 - Social effects of social media products

Facebook -
Positive : The positive aspects of this product is the fact that it alows instant communication between people and the popularity of this feature is evident through the fact that the messenger app may end up being more popular than the Facebbok app. Another positive aspect of Facebook is that it allows important issues to be circulated around a specific community easily. Facebook also allows users to stay up to date with almost anyhting, from politics to celebrities, films and music to video games. One of the biggest benefits of Facebook to my life has been the messenger feature. As any time im trying to organise anything with family or friends it's almost always done on Facebook Messenger.

Negative: Facebook had also had a ngative impact socially as people are not actually metting eeach other anymore, instead they are choosing to speak to each other over the internet. In some cases this is not a bad thing for example, as a said earlier, I use it to arrange going out with friends and so do a lot of other people I know, but this is not hre case universally. Another negative aspect is not directly caused by Facebook itself but some Facebook users who decide that their anonymity on the internet is the perfect excuse to torment people. While some people may ignore potentially hurtful comments, it is not so simple for someone who may already have a low self-esteem. 'Trolling' is also a mojor issue that plagues all social media, not just Facebook. 'Trolls' post hurtful, often extreme, comments directed at people that are meant only to hurt and upset a person Like cyber-bullying Trolls use internet anonymity to protect themeselves.

Twitter -
Positive : Twitter does have a direct messaging feature but it is not as much of a focus as it is on Facebook. Twitter focuses more on the news aspect in that recent updates from people you follow on your news feed. Another positve of twitter is that it so big that even a small niche business can find an audience. Twitter allows information to be communicated more directly as it limits the user to a maximum of 140 characters. Another positive of twitter is that Twitter allows much more direct communication between people, for example if someone tweets at a celebrity there is a much higher chance of them getting a response than on Facebook or other platforms.

Negative : As I said before when talking about the negatives of Facebook, Trolling and cyber-bullying are still very much present on Twitter. Twitter also isn't very good if you aren't good at expressing your thoughts in a small amount of characters as you are limited to 140 characters, the 140 character limit is both a positive and a negative depending on how you look at it. Social media is often claimed to be the cause of some peoples obsession with technology, while this is not true for everyone for some social media like Twitter and Facebook is definitely the cause of some if not most of the obsession with technology.

Facebook -

Purpose - The purpose of facebook is to keep in contact with friends, socialise and share information with other people on your friends list.
Content - The content of facebook consists of posts and photos from other people on your friends list. Facebook also includes advertisements for other products and companies in the form or facebook pages.
Target User - The target users for Facebook are people aged 12+ as there is no limit to the age of people who use facebook
Sources - Facebooks main source of revenue is largely to advertising that appears on the site for other products Facebook can personalise the ads a user sees based on what pages they like for example if the user likes Coca-Cola then they would see ads for Coca-Cola. Facebook also generates revenue from the games that users pay real money to play such as Farmville or Mafia wars. Another source of revenue for Facebook is the Facebook Gift Shop that allows users to send virtual gifts to each other itb incluses things like birthday and other occasion cards.
Legal/ethical- Facebook is one social media platform of many that are responible for problems that persist on sites of this type such as cyber-bullying, stalking and impersonating others. Facebook also allows people to share their opinions about literally anything, this can lead to misrepresentation regarding an organisation or an individual, and the only way this can be solved is if the post is reported and taken down.

Twitter -

Purpose - The purpose of Twitter is to keep up to date with people you follow and also update and share things with people who follow you.
Content - The content of Twitter is things that people who you follow share and post. Twitter also includes advertisments for a vareity of products.
Target user - The target user of twitter are people aged 13+ as arguably anyone of any age can use Twitter.
Sources - The main source of Twitters revenue is advertising through posts that will appear on peoples timelines or pages as a whole being promoted. If you follow Cadburys on Twitter then you would recieve updates from that page on your twitter and if you retweet things form that page then people who follow you would see it.
Legal and ethical -  Twitter has one of the same issues as Facebook because it too includes issues such as cyber bullying etc.
