LO3 Task 5 - Be able to plan for the development of a new soical media website
Purpose - The purpose of the site is to allow people to share news stories and give their opinion on any given story. Users of the site would be able to subscribe to receive updates from a story and have that story appear on their page under 'recent stories' and also have that story appear on friends news feeds.
Content - The content of the site would mainly be the news stories appearing on the users news feed but their is also a friends list and a direct messaging system on the site. The site would also have a calendar that would serve more of a purpose in the mobile app as it would sync with your closest friends calendar's and notify you for dates relating to them such as birthdays for example.
Target user/membership - The site would be free to sign up to and the target audience of it would be people of any gender aged 13+ as the average user of social media is between the ages of 13 and 30.
Possible revenue streams - My website will make money in similar ways to other social media platforms such as Facebook or YouTube, by using ads on the news stories the site will make money every time the story is clicked. For example the ads would appear at the sides of the page when viewing a news story.
Relevant legal and ethical - I would have to make sure that I have permission for all the images shown on the site. The data of users would also need to be protected for example passwords and email addresses etc, in order to do this the website will need an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).
Budgeting - The average cost of creating a social media website is is anywhere from £3,400 to £10,400. And to create an app it will cost about £4,500. And making the site itself is could take a group of expert engineers a few weeks to write the code. However this group of engineers would need paying. And the launch date for the website would be mid November, so 6 months from now.
Production Plan -

LO2 - Task 4 - Social media concept ideas
Purpose -
The purpose of the site would be to serve as a multi-purpose assistant that consists of updating news stories, the webstite also would have a built in calender that the user manually fills with reminders. and the user can also choose an amount of time before the date that they will get reminded (1 week, 3 days etc.). There would also be the option for the site to send remiders to any linked devices through the sites app. As the site will be linking to devices, data protection and security would be a priority so as to protect users devices and any information on these devices. The website would allow users to share news stories they are interested in and also filter the typs of stories they see (Entertainment, Politics, Sport etc.), so users don't recieve update on news stories that dont interest them. The site would also include a direct messaging system that uses either text voice or video chat. The users personal profile would list their name, birthday, interest and other details like this. Users could choose which of this information would appear in their profile.
Format/Style -
The format of the site would have the main focus of the page e.g. news feed, message inbox etc. A link to the users profile would be in the top right corner. To the left of the page there would also be a list of the users friends and recommended friends based on their phones contacts depending on if the user has linked their mobile phone.
Target user/membership -
The target user of the site would be people of any gender aged 13+. I chose this target user because a majority of people who use other social media platforms are aged between 13 and 30, However I am aware that a significant number of people older than 30 use things like facebook and twitter. However the average age of a social media platfroms user base varies from platform to paltform. For example 87% of adult aged 18-29 use Facebook and only 37% of adults aged 18-29 use Twitter , and over half of instagrams users are aged between 18 and 29.

LO1 - Commercial uses of Social Media
Advertising - Advertising is used frequently on social media in many different forms such as banners, pay-per click and sponsored links. Pay-per click advertising is widely used on search engines however it is also used on social media. A Pay-per click advert is a link that, when clicked, earns money for the publisher (social media platform) that is paid by the advertiser.
Viral marketing - viral marketing campaigns rely on word of mouth most of the time. For instance the most recent example of this is in the advertising campaign for Batman VS Superman, Warner brothers made a website and a twitter page for the fictional company LexCorp. Other films with viral marketing include Toy Story 3, and District 9. These marketing campaigns rely on people sending them around their friends, who then may send them to their friends and so on and so forth. This is often present in mobile games as well as free mobile games make their money through advertisements within the game.
Product/service reviews - Personal reviews often generate more user base for social media platforms as people tend to trust reviews from other users more than paid advertisements as they are often less biased and more honest. However user reviews could also be negative and show the product in a bad light as the people writing user reviews have no reason to be overly positive and as such will be honest. Product reviews are part of web 2.0 as the reviews are users communicating with other users.

LO1 - Task 2 - Social effects of social media products
Facebook -
Positive : The positive aspects of this product is the fact that it alows instant communication between people and the popularity of this feature is evident through the fact that the messenger app may end up being more popular than the Facebbok app. Another positive aspect of Facebook is that it allows important issues to be circulated around a specific community easily. Facebook also allows users to stay up to date with almost anyhting, from politics to celebrities, films and music to video games. One of the biggest benefits of Facebook to my life has been the messenger feature. As any time im trying to organise anything with family or friends it's almost always done on Facebook Messenger.
Negative: Facebook had also had a ngative impact socially as people are not actually metting eeach other anymore, instead they are choosing to speak to each other over the internet. In some cases this is not a bad thing for example, as a said earlier, I use it to arrange going out with friends and so do a lot of other people I know, but this is not hre case universally. Another negative aspect is not directly caused by Facebook itself but some Facebook users who decide that their anonymity on the internet is the perfect excuse to torment people. While some people may ignore potentially hurtful comments, it is not so simple for someone who may already have a low self-esteem. 'Trolling' is also a mojor issue that plagues all social media, not just Facebook. 'Trolls' post hurtful, often extreme, comments directed at people that are meant only to hurt and upset a person Like cyber-bullying Trolls use internet anonymity to protect themeselves.
Twitter -
Positive : Twitter does have a direct messaging feature but it is not as much of a focus as it is on Facebook. Twitter focuses more on the news aspect in that recent updates from people you follow on your news feed. Another positve of twitter is that it so big that even a small niche business can find an audience. Twitter allows information to be communicated more directly as it limits the user to a maximum of 140 characters. Another positive of twitter is that Twitter allows much more direct communication between people, for example if someone tweets at a celebrity there is a much higher chance of them getting a response than on Facebook or other platforms.
Negative : As I said before when talking about the negatives of Facebook, Trolling and cyber-bullying are still very much present on Twitter. Twitter also isn't very good if you aren't good at expressing your thoughts in a small amount of characters as you are limited to 140 characters, the 140 character limit is both a positive and a negative depending on how you look at it. Social media is often claimed to be the cause of some peoples obsession with technology, while this is not true for everyone for some social media like Twitter and Facebook is definitely the cause of some if not most of the obsession with technology.
